La venganza del pirarucú - The Revenge of the Pirarucu (Ancestral Science series)

$1,200.00

Ancestral Science is a series of collages that explores the intersection of ancestral and contemporary science, questioning the veracity of what is conceived as 'truth' and highlighting traditional, popular, vernacular, and indigenous technologies and forms of knowledge. Working with discarded science magazines, I reconstructed the scientific graphics to build images that inspire healing practices and are rooted in the preservation of the land and ancestral cultures. This work aims to point out the need to transform the damage caused by the Western extractivist approach to the land and the communities from the territories where the main materials for Western industries are sourced.

This piece, called La Venganza del Pirarucú, depicts a speculative future where the affected species come back to reclaim the life that was taken from them. The Pirarucú is a native fish from the Amazon, currently at risk due to climate change and river contamination from the use of poisonous minerals in gold and other material extraction. The image shows an elderly white man, symbolically blinded, teaching one of the most powerful Western technologies and colonial weapons: written language. From the tip of the chalk, a universe of animals, led by a slaughtered Pirarucú, emerges to restore natural cosmic orders.

Framed and ready to hang: 12 x 14 x 1 in
