‘Ode to the pentalobe security screw’  is a short informational book explaining the phenomenon of planned obsolescence, and its ideological counterpart, the Right-to-Repair movement. To enhance the impact of the information within, and to access the information at all, the reader must directly engage with the first step of the repair process, disassembly.

Only after figuring out how to unravel and unplug various cables, and avoid sharp corners, exposed wires, and live electricity, does the book make its information accessible. The difficulty of opening this book is intended to mimic the inaccessibility of information perpetuated by the anti-user repair design philosophies in objects that are planned to become obsolete.

Committed to local repair, Disengineering Society sourced all of the e-waste materials used in the creation of this book from a NYC waste bin.

Materials: Interactive Sculpture, Upcycled Electronic Waste
